Sinead O'Connor encourages her children to stay 'true' to themselves

The 'Nothing Compares 2 U' singer - who has children Jake, 24, Roisin, 16, Shane, eight, and Yeshua, six, from previous relationships - makes sure her offspring know how important it is to follow their dreams and not change to please anyone else because they are the most important things in life.

Speaking on British TV show 'Lorraine' show, Sinead said: "I always say to my kids the only purpose God put you on earth for is to be you 100 percent. To be who you are, that's success.

"Sometimes that means you may not have fame or a good name or money or stuff but that's not necessarily success, do you know what I mean? It's really can you be yourself and be true to your contract."

Sinead, 42, cancelled a tour last year due to her bipolar disorder - urging fans at the time to recommend a psychiatrist in her hometown of Dublin, Ireland, to save her from "serious danger" - but is now back on track with her new album 'How About I Be Me (And You Be You)?'.

She added: "I think I'm having a great time making music, I'm really enjoying that the live shows are going so well.

"Everyone's responded so well to the album and everything so I'm really glad the kind of focus is back on being a musician. So long as I just keep my mouth shut and behave myself ..."

Sinead follows her own advice, as the tattooed musician credits her success to being herself and consulting the "Holy Spirit" when making decisions.

The singer - who was once ordained as a priest by an Independent Catholic group - explained: "To me success is really can you be yourself. You're working in an area which can be very vampirical and spiritually slightly dodgy and can you get from one side of the board to the other is the way I see it.

"And still maintain the contract you made with the Holy Spirit before you got here and which you renew constantly along the line, which is basically just be yourself which is all I figure."

The 'Nothing Compares 2 U' singer - who has been married four times - is upset by people's attitudes to sex in her native Ireland, and has created an unusual new dating rule for herself.

She said: "You're not allowed to talk about sex in Ireland. The last four boyfriends I've had, their mothers have refused to meet me because I wrote articles about sex. Now I have a rule - I don't go out with anyone whose mother isn't dead."

Sinead - who split from her last husband, Irish drugs counsellor Barry Herridge, last year - is also planning to move with her children, Jake, 24, Roisin, 16, Shane, eight and Yeshua, six, from Ireland to London.

She said: "There's nothing to do but drink. And I don't drink. Why don't they sell the whole thing to Australia?"

The 46-year-old singer also says her children are a "stabilising influence" on her and helped her to curb her hard partying ways.

She added in an interview with the Daily Mirror newspaper: "[Motherhood] certainly was a stabilising influence. I'm the type of rock 'n' roll chick that would have enjoyed staying up all night being under every drug under the sun. It was good I was a mother early so I couldn't be f****d up myself. And it influences your songwriting. It makes you concerned with issues that you wouldn't be if you weren't a parent."

The 'Nothing Compares 2 U' singer - who has previously hit out at the Catholic Church, ripping up a picture of the Pope on live television - admits she has a "filthy" side but does not believe sex in any form should be "shameful".

She said: "I can talk about anything. To me, I may be rude and filthy; I'm also very sweet, and very loving and very affectionate.

"To me, sex is a godly, sacred thing. It doesn't matter, as long as it's consensual, no one gets hurt, or does anything against their will. So to me, there's nothing shameful about, you know, boning."

Despite being better known for her witty quips than for her music on occasions, Sinead admits she would not want to stop being funny because she wants to be herself.

She said: "I feel I have to be me. I understand where people are coming from when they say [it distracts from the music], but my mission in life since I became famous is to remain myself no matter f**king what."

Sinead O’Connor has been unlucky in love – that’s a fair thing to say when you’ve got four busted marriages behind you, right? – but that doesn’t mean she’s giving up on meeting her dream guy.

Though it was only 11 months ago since she wed Irish drugs counselor Barry Herridge in a quickie Vegas ceremony – that one lasted slightly longer than a Kim Kardashian marriage – Sinead, 45, is back in the game with an anthropologist she met while helping him with his thesis.

“He’s gorgeous, lovely and sexy and really nice to me. I’ve been very lucky with boyfriends,” Sinead told the Irish Sun about her new guy, who she only refers to as David.

“David wrote to me and I helped him out with his thesis. We were mates for about eight months and then started going out two months ago.”

Sinead says she’s not going to blab too much about her man. “This is something I want for me.  I think I have learned from the mistakes,” she says.

“But I am the one in the public eye so I like to keep that little part to myself.”

She and Herridge, who she wed in the Little White Wedding Chapel with a pink Cadillac on standby, are still buds, she says.

Sinead O’Connor, who has only recently resurrected on Twitter under the handle @NoMansWoman, has been Tweeting back and forth with Limerick’s own hip-hop comedy duo The Rubberbandits.

On Sunday, The Rubberbandits (@Rubberbandits) tweeted to Sinead O’Connor (@NoMansWoman) saying “we're in Edinburgh discussing your work, and we've decided that we love you.”

O’Connor responded only moments later: “@Rubberbandits I was in Waterford discussing YOUR work only last night! and have always loved you! Can I be the slut in ur next video?”

The Rubberbandits replied to O’Connor’s offer saying simply: “@NoMansWoman yes you most definitely can.”

O’Connor followed up with: “@Rubberbandits am happy to be evil witch too.. Or anything for that matter.. I'd f*** brian Cowan To be in your s***.”

Fifteen minutes after that, O’Connor clarified to her nearly 1,500 followers by saying “For any1 who doesn't know The Rubberbandits check you tube 'Horse Outside' and prepare to p*** your panties.”

Not only is O’Connor a fan of The Rubberbandits, but also of foul language, evidently.

The Rubberbandits said to O’Connor that they were gigging at Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival, and described it as great craic. O’Connor tweeted to another follower that the Limerick bred duo are “very very silly. Silly is the most important thing on earth to be.”

Sinead O’Connor could have been wearing pinstripes if it wasn’t for her music career, she says.

In an interview broadcast last Sunday on the BBC, O’Connor said that she didn’t have talent to pursue any other vocation.  "There were a lot of good things about [early fame] – I was going to make a living being a singer, which was great, because I couldn't do anything else and I was headed down a sort of, pretty criminal path and if I hadn't got rescued by music, I probably could have ended up in trouble,” she said.

She’s certainly caused a lot of that during her career, now in its fourth decade – the biggest trouble coming after she shredded a picture of the Pope on Saturday Night Live in 1992.  She was asked what she remembered about that time, and all she could come up with was an incident that happened when she left the show’s studios when a “bunch of fellas” threw eggs at her and her childhood friend.

Sinead and the pal were star sprinters at school, she said, and they ran after the guys. “We made them apologize, then we got in a cab and went home,” she added.

She still has the white lace dress she wore onstage that night. In fact it used to belong to British
songstress Sade, and Sinead bought it at an auction.

“She may not know this, but when I came to England in 1985 I went to a rock 'n' roll auction and I bought a dress for £800 that used to belong to Sade. It was one of Sade's favorites, one of her famous white dresses and I was wearing it on Saturday Night Live and now my daughter wears it and she's going to wear it as her wedding dress,” Sinead said.

“So I've said to my daughter, 'This is a dress for women to cause trouble in.’ Of course, Sade is a lady and behaves herself at all times."

The singer – who released her new LP 'How About I Be Me (And You Be You?) earlier this week – hopes people who are listening to it are taken on a journey, but admits essentially it boils down to one thing, sex.

She told The Word magazine: "I always liked the idea that you listened to my records like reading the diaries of someone recovering from very severe abuse.

"A journey documented musically, and the whole point of the journey is to get happy. There's no point taking the journey if, at the end of it, you're going to be f**king miserable. But it's all down to the c**k, obviously. As it always is."

Sinead has previously made public pleas for sex and she admits she did so to cause trouble.

She said: "It was amusing, because we're still a very repressed country about sexuality. It was hilarious, reactions and reactions, six weeks of complete f**king mayhem which was just the best six weeks I've ever had in my life!"

The 'Wolf Is Getting Married' singer – who has previously revealed a love of the drug – admits her children, Jake, 24, Roisine, 15, Shane, seven and Yeshua, five, do not know she enjoys smoking dope because she does so in secret.

She said: "Oh the kids don't know I smoke dope! I just sneak down the garden. But kids now, they're very anti-drink and drugs and cigarettes."

Sinead has come to an agreement with her daughter Roisine that she will get drunk for the first time in the presence of her mother so she can assess how she reacts.

She added: "Roisine is 16 in March and I have an agreement that the first few times she drinks, she'll do it at home. So she knows whether she's the type who's going to have her knickers round her ankles after a bottle of vodka walking down the high street."

However she admits she has a stricter view of her children smoking weed than she has on herself, because she is worried she would "lose them down a tunnel".

She told The Word magazine: "With the older one and his mates, yeah, they were smoking dope but they were 18, 19. And I was more worried they'd be out getting arrested. Which has happened.

"So I just said, 'I'm going to pretend I didn't see it and just go down the garden and don't get arrested.' But now I wouldn't allow it. With teenagers you can lose them like that, down a tunnel."

The 'Nothing Compares 2 U' hitmaker – who has had an on-off relationship with Barry Herridge since their marriage in December – thinks her spouse is "completely and utterly nuts" and so obsessed with death, he thinks he will pass away in three years.

She said: "He's a very unusual character. We call him Wednesday, out of 'The Addams Family.'

"He has this mad thing where he's convinced he's going to die in three years. I keep laughing. He asked me to marry him on the first date. He said, 'Because I'll need you to do this, that, with my ashes.' We're working out the funeral every day. He's completely and utterly nuts in a very safe way. I'm having a great time."

The Irish singer has had three previous marriages, and she admits she was initially reluctant to walk down the aisle again.

She told The Word magazine: "I had an enormous aversion to marrying again but he changed my mind. I dunno, ask Rod Stewart. No one seems to mind when it's fellas. Having previously advertised for a sexual partner on the internet, Sinead – who is now married to fourth husband Barry Herridge – admits she shields her 15-year-old daughter Roisine from what she says in public.

She told The Word magazine: "I don't say it in front of her! She's worse than me anyway. She's determined to marry the singer from Muse, despite his being married to Kate Hudson. She has Muse carved into the side of her head. (sic)"

Muse front-man Matt Bellamy is engaged to actress Kate, the mother of his six-month-old son Bingham.

Sinead - who has been married twice before - previously claimed the harsh treatment of the Irish media had driven him away, despite her also claiming he had become nervous when she had gone out to find drugs on the first night of their marriage in Las Vegas.

She wrote in a statement: "His association with me became something very bad for his life. And slowly since we were married I became very ill as result of what was done to my husband and I was unable to cope. And became depressed.

It appears that some celebs have gotten their Irish up just a bit too much this year. FOX411’s PopTart column did their fifth annual Top 10 Celebrity Meltdowns recently, and this list was full of Irish and Irish American stars.

No stranger to controversy, Irish singer Sinead O’Connor rounded out the list in a three-way tie between herself, Johnny Depp and Susan Sarandon. O’Connor was added to the list for her eyebrow-raising comments earlier this year that if Pope Benedict XVI came to visit Ireland, she would incite an all-out “bloodbath.”

At number 9 is Alec Baldwin, who attempted a Twitter uprising following his removal from a American Airlines flight for refusing to shut off his mobile ‘Words with Friends’ game. The flight crew insisted Baldwin was unruly, and in turn, Baldwin wants his hit show ‘30 Rock’ removed from the in-flight entertainment.

What celeb meltdown list is complete with Lindsay Lohan? The former Disney tween queen made a mess of 2011 between shop-lifting, jail-time and failed random alcohol tests. She closed her year by doing a spread for Playboy, which ironically, was deemed rather tasteful.

And, of course, the clear-cut winner for biggest meltdown of the year is handed over to actor Charlie Sheen, who had less than a “winning!” year. His bizarre antics over the summer had people concerned for his well-being, and also led to his termination from the CBS hit ‘Two and A Half Men.’ Thankfully, Sheen seems to be in a better spot mentally, so here’s to a happy and healthy 2012 for him.

Sinead and three-month long boyfriend Barry Herridge tied the knot at a Las Vegas wedding chapel last week. The two first met when Herridge responded to one of O’Connor’s online posts about being ‘starved for sex.’

At the wedding, O’Connor wore an understated pale pink strapless gown, with Herridge in a traditional suit. Following the nuptials, O’Connor blogged that the day was “too glorious for words” though she would update readers yesterday about the ceremony.

"So as I was writing these articles about sex, and Twitter and everything, it was a very interesting experience and I got the feeling that it was 50/50, half the country was amused because it was funny, and they other half were very serious and just took it terrible seriously.

"So there was a fair bit of abuse and I thought, wait, it’s actually okay for me to be me, we can all be whoever we are. So it made me write a new song for the record and actually change the title of the record, which is the only reason I’m telling this long story. So the record is now called 'How About I Be Me, And You Be You.'"

She said the only reason she had launched an online search for a partner was due to her deep unhappiness. She explained “Truth is I only did all this for the last month cuz I was so depressed about my marriage breaking up and I got tired of crying.”

She continued “And tired of thinking I'm a sh*t person all day. So I thought I'd turn it into something funny. And it worked! And I had more fun last four weeks than I had for years. And had self-esteem.”

It seems that on Tuesday O’Connor had had a bad experience which tipped her over the edge. She said “Now I wish I was dead. No hope…Anyway…If anyone knows how I can kill myself without my kids finding out I did it deliberately please tell me.”
